Cotton vs. Polyester vs. Blends: Which Print Method Actually Works on Your Fabric
Short Answer
Cotton and high-cotton blends work with any method. Polyester and performance fabric need DTF or embroidery — DTG's pretreatment doesn't bond reliably to synthetic fiber, and screen printing ink can crack on stretchy athletic fabric.
100% cotton
The most versatile option — screen printing, DTG, DTF, and embroidery all work well. Cotton takes ink and pretreatment evenly and holds a stitch cleanly, which is why it's the default recommendation when there's no other constraint.
Cotton-poly blends (50/50, 80/20, tri-blends)
Mostly fine for all methods, with a small caveat: the higher the polyester percentage, the less reliably DTG pretreatment bonds. Above roughly 65% polyester, DTF or screen printing becomes the safer bet over DTG.
100% polyester and performance/athletic fabric
DTG is largely off the table here — the ink doesn't bond well to synthetic fiber, and a print can crack or wash out early. DTF handles this fabric well since it's a heat-bonded film rather than ink absorbed into fibers. Embroidery also works well on structured polyester garments like polos and jackets.
Fleece (hoodies, sweatshirts)
Depends entirely on the blend. Cotton-heavy fleece works with screen printing or DTG. Poly-blend and performance fleece needs DTF or embroidery. Check the tag, or ask when requesting a quote and we'll steer you to the right method for that specific blank.

Check the care tag — it's required by law to list fiber content. If you're choosing a blank from scratch, ask for the fabric spec before finalizing so the print method gets matched correctly from the start.
