DTF and DTG get lumped together constantly because they solve the same basic problem — full-color printing without screen setup costs. But they're mechanically different processes, and the differences matter more the longer you own the shirt.
How they're actually different
DTG (direct-to-garment) sprays ink straight into the fibers, the same principle as an inkjet printer working on fabric instead of paper. DTF (direct-to-film) prints onto a film first, then heat-presses that image on top of the fabric as a layer. DTG becomes part of the shirt; DTF sits on top of it.
Hand feel
DTG on 100% cotton tends to feel closer to the fabric itself, especially on lighter prints. DTF has a slightly more noticeable texture, similar to a high-quality vinyl transfer, though quality DTF has gotten close enough that many people can't tell blind.
Fabric compatibility
This is where DTF clearly wins: it adheres well to polyester, blends, and even nylon. DTG is built for cotton and struggles on synthetic fabric without special pretreatment that many Indianapolis shops don't bother offering for one-off orders.
Durability over many washes
Both hold up fine for normal wear when washed properly (cold, inside-out, low heat dry). DTF's top-layer application tends to show edge-cracking slightly sooner under heavy, frequent industrial washing; DTG's ink-in-fiber approach tends to fade more evenly rather than crack.
The practical takeaway
For cotton shirts ordered occasionally, either works well and price will likely be the deciding factor. For athletic polyester, hats, or bags, DTF is the more reliable choice by a wide margin.
